Effect of Reclamation Technique on Mammal Communitites Inhabiting Wetlands on Mined Lands in East-Central Ohio

چکیده
Mammal communities were studied from May through August, 1988 to 1990, at four wetland sites in Coshocton and Muskingum counties, OH. Sites represented varying degrees of disturbance from mining activity and subsequent reclamation techniques, including a wetland constructed to treat mine water drainage. Each site was composed of a series of three cattail (Typba latifolid) cells for a balanced experimental design. Mammals were inventoried with snap trap removal grids and midday surveys for signs of activity. Mammal diversity and richness was highest at the constructed wetland and lowest at the site established with traditional reclamation procedures. Predictable patterns of land use disturbance for species presence/ absence were observed with some alpha diversity (habitat specific) species being absent (i.e., tree squirrels) and gamma diversity (wide-ranging) species such as mustelids occurring rarely. Beta diversity species (habitat generalists) like woodchucks (Marmota monax) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were common at all sites. The white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) was the small mammal captured most frequently, being the most abundant small mammal at the constructed wetland and the undisturbed site, with meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) most prevalent at the remaining sites. These results suggest that a wetland constructed for the treatment of mine water drainage can provide secondary benefits as habitat for a variety of mammal species. OHIO J. SCI. 91 (4): 154-158, 199

Small Mammal Populations on Ohio Strip- Mined Lands Reclaimed with Herbaceous Vegetation Under Old New Reclamation Laws
During the summers of 1978 and 1979, indices to small mammal populations were obtained in east-central Ohio on lands strip-mined for coal. The study sites were on lands reclaimed with herbaceous vegetation before or after enactment of the 1972 Ohio reclamation laws that required topsoiling before seeding. In the two years, 26,489 snap-trap-nights and 564 pitfall-trap-nights were recorded, and 3...
متن کاملCoal Mining and Landscape Change: The Case of Harrison County, Ohio
The evolving landscape of Harrison County, Ohio illustrates the interaction between increasing coal demand and modern mining technology upon the available resource base, as modified by changing reclamation policies and practices. A subsistance production period (before 1915) and an early commercial period (1916-1940) were followed by the high, but fluctuating, coal demands of the current commer...
متن کاملSurvey for the Presence of Phytophthora cinnamomi on Reclaimed Mined Lands in Ohio Chosen for Restoration of the American Chestnut
We have been planting blight resistant American chestnut seedlings on reclaimed coal mined areas in Southeastern Ohio, which was once within the natural range of the American chestnut. Towards the goal of restoring the American chestnut, we are testing suitable sites that can aid survival, growth and establishment of planted seedlings pre-inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi. Prior to the arri...

In this study the effects of land use change from salt affected land to cropland on soil quality indicators were studied in Chahafzal region, Yazd province, central Iran. Composite soil samples from 0-30 and 30-60 cm depths of saline and cultivated land were taken. Soil particle size distribution, calcium carbonate, Available water capacity (AWC), Electrical conductivity (ECe), Soil reaction (p...
متن کاملNutritive Levels in Plants from Stripmined Areas in Eastern Ohio
Data on nutritive quality of vegetation for stripmined lands were obtained in 1972-73 from 2 Ohio counties, one having generally acidic spoil banks and the other having calcareous spoils. Proximate analysis of water, ash, crude protein, ether extract, cell-wall constituents, and nitrogen-free extract revealed few significant differences between plants growing on stripped and undisturbed (contro...
